I have no additional comment on whips, but thought this was a good place to mention that the game hasn’t used Havok for physics for quite some time. We use an in-house custom physics engine now.
We like making all our own stuff. I’m not sure if there were any limitations or anything that forced us to, it’s just preferable to have internally produced and controlled tools. And I’m sure licensing Havok ain’t free.
